Submitting your website to directories will help you gain targeted traffic. Though less traffic the visitors are likely to be your prospects as they browse through categories in the directories and choose your website. Also submitting a website in directories increases your chance of getting good rank in search results.
You can submit your website to "free directories" and "paid directories". There are many free directories available on the web, such as DMOZ, Yahoo!, AbiLogic etc.
The only difference between the free and paid directories is
- Free directories take long time to list your website.
- Paid directories list your website in a day or two.
Before submitting to directories here are few check points
- Review your site for broken links, typos, broken images
- When submitting your website to the directory select the best suited category
- Two lines that describes your business clearly.

Most important factors that help your website to get properly indexed by search engines
Before posting the tips for submitting your website to search engines thought I should brief a little on most important factors to get your website properly indexed by the search engines.
The factors are
The title tag is so important because the search engines matches the search queries with the words in the title tag so you must include the targeted keyphrases that describes your business.
It should be of 60 characters in length
Meta Tags:
Description: The description tag is used to describe your business using the targeted keyphrases. The information in the description tag is used by the search engines to summarize your website in the search listings.
It should be of 2 lines(25-30 words) in length.
Keywords: Keyword tag is nothing but the list of "keyword phrases" that describes the theme of your website and it should in the order of importance. Never include the keywords that are not relevant to your theme. Avoid duplicate list.
Body Text: Describe about the scope of your website, your business, products/services you offer, etc. The copy should include the "keyword phrases" that are present in the title and meta tags. This will help the search engines to understand that the key phrases are very important and relevant to your website theme. Good quality contents will help you to increase your search engine rankings.
The next session will brief on submitting websites to search engines.
The factors are

How Search Engines Work
There are two types of search engines "crawler-based" and "human-powered." However the generic term "search engine" describes both types.
Search Engines use software called "Spiders" that crawls the Internet looking for documents and their web addresses.
The documents and web addresses collected is sent to the search engine's indexing software.
The indexing software extracts information from the documents and stores it in a database. The indexing software functionality depends on the search engine. Some index the whole content in the document and others index only the document title.
When a user search by entering keywords, the search engines search the database for documents that match.
Finally the search engine lists the results with a title, short descriptions and web addresses which are hypertext links(The user can click the link).
Hoping the post is very simple to read and easy to understand..Let's see how to get indexed in the search engines in the next session.

Definition of SEO (Search Engine Optimization )
Search Engine Optimization is the process of making your website to appear in the top 10 search results of a search engine. I tried a simple definition :).. It is the process of increasing traffic(visitors) to your website by improving your visibility in the search engines.
Wiki definition for SEO - Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.
In the next few posts I would be briefing on
